Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (Lupus)

Watch the video below to see our approach to Lupus.

1 - What Is Lupus?

Lupus is a disease that occurs when your body's immune system attacks your own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease). Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments. The most distinctive sign of lupus — a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across both cheeks — occurs in many but not all cases of lupus. Some people are born with a tendency toward developing lupus, which may be triggered by infections, certain drugs or even sunlight.

2 - Problem

The big problem is, Lupus patients never get a detailed enough history or testing done to really explain as to why they have their ANA marker show up positive on blood work. Instead, they are just given immune system suppressing medications to try and weaken the immune system instead of ever digging for the cause as to why that marker tested positive in the first place. As most patients find out, while immune suppression has its place short term, it is not meant to be a long term therapy option for people. Suppressing the immune system long term is basically the equivalent of trying to deal with the smoke coming off a fire… while the house burns down. This is what leaves the patient feeling so stuck, is that the problem keeps progressing and nothing changes with the treatment options offered to them. They continue to have symptoms, they continue to struggle, but the cause is never addressed, so the fire still burns and does damage.

3 - Fix

Our approach begins with a comprehensive history and screening to identify what is causing the ANA pattern on bloodwork to show up to begin with. Typically we find that there is either a significant infectious history or medication usage in the past that causes the onset of the disease. Once we can identify these patterns, we can develop a specific treatment strategy that allows us to target the things that are causing the problem, therefore taking the pressure off of the immune system. It is a system that we call Functional Blueprint, which we have another video that goes further into detail about that on this page as well down below if you want more information. Due to advances in technology in healthcare, what is called biotechnology, it allows us to specifically target the high leverage points in someone’s ANA battle and address it at its core source.
